Description

A superior organic Earl Grey, made with the full tea leaf from Nilgiri, India. Scented with the oil of bergamot, extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, a fragrant citrus fruit.

The Earl Grey blend is named after the 2nd Earl Grey, British Prime Minister in the 1830s and author of the Reform Bill of 1832, who reputedly received a gift, probably a diplomatic perquisite, of tea flavoured with bergamot oil. Bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus tree which blossoms during the winter and is grown commercially in Italy. It is likely a hybrid of Citrus limetta and Citrus aurantium.

Jacksons of Piccadilly claim they originated Earl Grey’s Tea, Lord Grey having given the recipe to Robert Jackson & Co. partner George Charlton in 1830. According to Jacksons, the original recipe has been in constant production and has never left their hands. Theirs has been based on China tea since the beginning.

According to the Grey family, the tea was specially blended by a Chinese mandarin for Lord Grey, to suit the water at Howick Hall, the family seat in Northumberland, using bergamot in particular to offset the preponderance of lime in the local water. Lady Grey used it to entertain in London as a political hostess

Our Nilgiri base is from Nilgiri, India. One of the highest tea estates in the world, approximately 8000ft above sea level, giving it a remarkably pleasant delicacy.

The Nilgiri (Tamil: நீலகிரி, Badaga: நீலகி:ரி or blue mountains), often referred to as the Nilgiri Hills, are a range of mountains with at least 24 peaks above 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), in the westernmost part of Tamil Nadu state at the junction of Karnataka and Kerala states in Southern India. They are part of the larger Western Ghats mountain chain making up the southwestern edge of the Deccan Plateau.

  1. Lola

Having tried a variety of earl greys, I knew this one is the winner. When having company I often serve this tea, and receive outstanding compliments every time.

  2. Ekaterina

The quality is amazing, delicious and aromatic!

  3. Kit

This is definitely the cleanest and most fragrant Earl Grey tea I’ve tasted. I prefer to drink my tea with honey and milk and keep the bag in the cup. The tea never becomes bitter or overly astringent.

  4. Mommaesq

Lovely and fragrant. Just like what I enjoyed in the finer tea rooms of London.

  5. Mommaesq

Clean, fragrant, and well blended. Like what I was served in finer tea rooms of London.

  6. Donna

Some Early Grey teas have a sharp edge to them. Not this one! I blend organic lavender flowers with the Early Grey. DELICIOUS

  7. felicia

i love this! just amazing. You will never regret once you try organic loose tea.

  8. felicia

Can’t compare with any other eary grey in a tea bag.

  9. Tom

There is no comparison around. A full, wonderfully aromatic experience. Even brewed very strong the taste is perfect. What a pleasure!

  10. Nudge Nudge

Since Earl Grey is the standard by which I judge a tea company this was the first I tried. Excellent quality.

  11. ArtProf

Just like all these reviews, you can’t go wrong with this Earl Grey!

Overall – more aromatic and still subtle while not being overbearing in its astringency with each brew. Steeped around 200 F and timed at 3, 3:30, 4, then 5 minutes for each consecutive brew. It’s very potent for the amount and I am very happy with this tea. I have found the holy grail of Earl Grey teas! I normally put honey in my tea but this is good enough without it.

If you’re an Earl Grey fan, and you haven’t tried this loose leaf tea then you haven’t had proper Earl Grey – you absolutely can’t go wrong with this batch!

  12. Amazing

Great aromatic tea that is wonderful when brought with me on any outdoor adventure or simply going to work!

  13. Mckenzie

An excellent brew-best organic Earl Grey I’ve tried. Aromatic, fresh and not astringent. My daily morning brew, and an early afternoon treat when it’s cold outside. Truly well done and a delight to drink.

The tea is excellent! Loved it! My teas of preference are usually green teas and herbal blends. However, this Early Grey tea is fantastic both sweetened and unsweetened.
