Our World Message

In May of 1962, Satish Kumar and Prabhakar Menon, two followers of Gandhian non-violence inspired by the antiwar activism of 90-year old Bertrand Russell, left India on foot, with no money or food, and began a journey they called a “peace pilgrimage” to the four nuclear capitals: Moscow, Paris, London and Washington. Their goal was to end what they termed “nuclear nonsense” and help to create world peace.

Along the way, always walking, having traveled through India, Pakistan and Persia and into the Soviet Union, they stopped at an Armenian tea factory and were presented by one of the workers there with four packets of “peace tea” to give to the leaders in each of the capitals they were to visit, and to tell the leaders that if they ever were to consider using nuclear weapons, that they first have a cup of tea and remember that the people of the world want the simple things like bread, tea and peace.

In November of 1997, Linda Smith and Cary Berliner, two peace pilgrims from upstate New York, started a small organic tea company dedicated to the principles of organic farming, fair trade, and healing the planet through environmental and social consciousness. We are also followers of Gandhi’s principles and believe that “Peace is the Path,” and we create all our tea blends with the mission of creating world peace one cup at a time.
